Vietnam has made strides in achieving its goals in clean energy by entering into a collaboration with Denmark regarding the development of an offshore wind project that will cost US$4 billion or more. Alnhzvw’e state-owned energy company, Petrovietnam, and Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP), a Danish investment firm, have oqcusb to develop the Nam Trung Bo 1 offshore wind project in south-central Vietnam.
This collaboration came about during the state visit of the president of Vietnam, To Lam, to Denmark in October 2026.
Project to Add 1,000 MW of Offshore Wind Capacity
The proposed facility is designed to have a capacity of 1,000 megawatts (MW), and it is estimated to require more than US$4 billion in investment. The project is being implemented in two sub-phases, but the timing and financing structure of the project are yet to be agreed upon.
Petrovietnam and CIP are addressing some crucial aspects of the project, which include investment incentives, power purchase agreement, and financing and risk-sharing structure.
The deal marks a significant step in developing Vietnam‘s offshore wind resources for electricity production. But the project is still in its initial development phase, and many things will determine whether the project can be delivered successfully or not.
Supporting Vietnam’s Renewable Energy Targets
However, Vietnam has very bold plans to harness renewable energy as a result of growing electricity demand due to industrial growth and urbanization. The Vietnamese Power Development Plan VIII envisages the installation of roughly 6,000 MW of offshore wind power by 2030 and 17,500 MW by 2035.
Its goal is to build up a more diverse energy mix and move ahead to its commitment of net-zero emission by 2050.
Offshore wind may help realize these goals as there are abundant wind sources available in the coastal waters. Offshore wind installations may further facilitate the development of the industrial sector through the demand for specialized vessels, foundations, electrical gear and engineering.
Denmark Brings Offshore Wind Expertise
Denmark has great experience in offshore wind power generation, technology, and integration of renewables into the power system. The cooperation of Denmark and Vietnam could lead to the transfer of knowledge and experience in investment, project management, etc.
Petrovietnam can offer experience of decades of offshore hydrocarbons development. It would be helpful for offshore renewable energy projects.
This cooperation could lead to participation of Vietnamese companies in the emerging offshore wind power supply chain. However, creating manufacturing capacities in Vietnam will need investments and training of the labor force.
Financing and Infrastructure Remain Key Challenges
Although there is great promise in offshore wind power, it entails many up-front costs and stringent construction needs. There is a need for financing, business plans for purchasing electricity, and a need for transmission lines that can handle the extra capacity. The right regulations and stable investment environment will be crucial in drawing investors into such projects.
The Vietnamese-Danish deal demonstrates international collaboration towards clean energy, although its future success will depend on how well it is implemented. Nam Trung Bo 1, if successfully developed, will be helpful in meeting Vietnam’s renewable energy targets and its climate goals in the future.
