Singapore Diving Team

Singapore will create history with the country’s largest diving squad 10 divers taking part at the 22nd World Aquatics Championships from July 11 to August 3 at the OCBC Aquatic Centre in Kallang. This is a considerable increase from the four athlete team which attended the championship in Doha last year.

The team consists of a combination of established athletes and upcoming athletes including 5 debutants that also demonstrated scouting methods and a clearer development pathway in aquatics in Singapore. Diving, one of the six sports at the Championships, has 13 medal events across multiple disciplines.

Team Ready to Compete at Home

Daniel Campbell is the Sport Director of Diving and Artistic Swimming at Singapore Aquatics and is hopeful for the team. He told CNA some of the divers could make it to the semi-finals and added that, “The expectation is not to just be there… We want them to show up and do a really good performance.”

Charlie Tu, national head coach pointed to video feedback technology as a way of comparing techniques against international standards and areas for improvement. The team’s preparation also included mental work to help the players manage competitive pressure.

This record sized contingent shows Singapore’s ambition in diving by demonstrating pipeline depth and willingness to confront regional powerhouses like China and Malaysia. With the Championships being hosted in Singapore, it is also a perfect time for the local athletes to have great performances of their own and hopefully inspire the next generation of divers.
