‘All Quiet on the Western Front’ wins Oscar for best international film

On Sunday, the Academy Awards announced that the German film “All Quiet on the Western Front,” an epic about World War I that had nine nominations for Oscars this year, was the winner of the award for best international film.

The horrors of trench warfare are shown in the Netflix Inc. (NFLX.O) film directed by Edward Berger. The perspective of the film is that of a young guy who at first is eager to participate in the conflict. It is the first German-language adaptation of a novel written by Erich Maria Remarque in 1928. The novel was also adapted into a film in 1930 that won the Academy Award for Best Picture.

“All Quiet on the Western Front” tells the story of a young man who, after being indoctrinated by right-wing political nationalist propaganda, believes that going to war will be an exciting adventure. However, war is anything but an exciting adventure, as the film’s producer, Malte Grunert, stated in his acceptance speech for the award for best film at the BAFTA awards a month ago.

According to the review published by Sight & Sound, the movie “is in fascinating dialogue with not just its source material, but the long history of warfare and cinema about war and atrocities.” The publication also stated that the movie owed a debt to other movies such as “1917,” “Saving Private Ryan,” and “Black Hawk Down.”

This year, the motion picture was nominated for nine different awards, including “Best Picture.” Only “Everything Everywhere All at Once” received more accolades, with 11 in all.

The international films “EO” from Poland, “The Silent Girl” from Ireland, “Close” from Belgium, and “Argentina, 1985” from Argentina were all up for consideration for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, but “All Quiet on the Western Front” emerged victorious.
