ASEAN Russia Trade cooperation took a new step forward following the meeting of the ASEAN Secretary-General, Dr Kao Kim Hourn with the Russian business community on 13 October 2026 in Moscow. The talks were centered around further investment opportunities, closer business relations and opportunities in the major sectors. The meeting emphasized the efforts aimed at making the diplomatic engagement into practical economic cooperation between the Southeast Asian countries and Russia.

ASEAN Chief Holds Talks With Russian Business Leaders

Along with the members of the business community of Russia, Dr. Kao Kim Hourn met with the chairman of the Russia–ASEAN Business Council, Ivan Polyakov. During the meeting, the discussions included opportunities to further strengthen trade ties, investment pathways and practical measures to facilitate ASEAN Russia Trade relations, according to the official ASEAN Secretariat announcement.

Energy, Agriculture and Digital Investment Opportunities

The following are priority areas identified in the discussions: energy, food security, agriculture, supply-chain connectivity, and digital transformation. Regular business missions, company matchmaking and investment partnerships were looked at by both sides. These activities may be useful in locating potential partners, creating joint projects or enhancing the commercial access to regional markets.

ASEAN Russia Trade Partnership Gains Momentum

The Moscow discussions followed September’s ASEAN–Russia economic consultations in Manila. Ministers endorsed a strategic trade and investment programme for 2026–2035. According to the joint ministerial statement, bilateral merchandise trade reached approximately $17.8 billion in 2025, demonstrating an established economic relationship.

What Stronger ASEAN Russia Cooperation Could Mean

The meeting was held during Dr. Kao’s working trip to Russia on 13-15 October. He also held discussions with the Russian side including President’s advisor Anton Kobyakov on the matter of economic cooperation. The ASEAN Secretariat said there was interest in strengthening practical cooperation but no new investment agreement was made public.
