Discussions regarding the importance of Aung San Suu Kyi, the imprisoned State Counsellor, in determining the nation’s future have been triggered by the turbulent civil war in Myanmar since the military takeover in 2021. Due to her significant influence on Myanmar’s politics over the past three decades, it is essential to consider current assertions that history has forgotten her. The idea gained pace due to the visit of departing Thai Foreign Minister Don Pramudwinai, who was granted an interview with Aung San Suu Kyi and advocated for unrestricted discussion to resolve the problem in Myanmar. But amid scepticism and opposing viewpoints, the question surfaces: Has Aung San Suu Kyi lost her significance in the ongoing fight for democracy and peace in Myanmar?

Aung San Suu Kyi has been purposefully ignored by Myanmar’s military leadership in their efforts to bring about peace in the nation. However, rather than eliminating her from the political picture, their goal appears to be to weaken the commitment of the opposition movement. Because of her well-known dedication to democratic ideas, Aung San Suu Kyi is unlikely to take on a role that would promote military authority and compromise her values.

The fact that Aung San Suu Kyi was re-elected in 2020 with a landslide vote shows how well-liked she continues to be in Myanmar. However, over the course of her previous five-year administration, her appeal has gradually diminished due to her inability to resolve the nation’s many problems. The National Unity Government (NUG), People’s Defence Forces (PDF), and regional resistance organisations have also assumed prominent positions in the democracy movement after the military coup, eclipsing Aung San Suu Kyi’s prominence.

The NUG and armed opposition organisations’ rejection of Aung San Suu Kyi’s signature strategy of peaceful political reform demonstrates a difference in approaches to overthrowing the junta. These groups have turned to violent struggle, including contentious strategies such as targeted killings and urban explosions. The strategy Aung San Suu Kyi uses contrasts with the more aggressive position these organisations take.

Aung San Suu Kyi serves as the NUG’s State Counsellor; however, her position is primarily ceremonial. She is not actively participating in NUG decision-making and might even disagree with some of its policies. For instance, her rigid stance on the Rohingya crisis contrasts with the NUG’s inclusive strategy, demonstrating different viewpoints.

Different ethnic armed organisations, political organisations, dissidents, and armed gangs make up Myanmar’s opposition movement. They have joined in opposition to the junta, but their agendas, philosophies, and styles of governance differ significantly. Regardless of her support or involvement, Aung San Suu Kyi’s voice would be one of many in this complicated environment, making communication with the junta difficult.

When Aung San Suu Kyi defended Myanmar’s armed forces in the International Court of Justice against allegations of genocide, her reputation on the global stage took a huge hit. Although she continues to be significant to Western officials, her influence has diminished, and a new generation of Myanmarese leaders now calls for greater focus. The international community finally acknowledges that the nation contains a broader range of views and perspectives.

Even though Aung San Suu Kyi’s political influence has changed significantly, it would be premature to write her out of Myanmar’s power structure completely. She remains a powerful symbol for the military junta, the opposition movement, and ASEAN, but her weakened political position and moral compromise have lessened her direct influence. Aung San Suu Kyi, however, cannot be discounted as a significant player in Myanmar’s complicated political system, given her historical importance and continued popularity among some sections of the populace.
