MANILA – Sy-led lender BDO Unibank Inc. is the country’s top taxpayer for 2019 with nearly a month ahead of the thrice extended deadline, according to the Department of Finance on Monday, May 25.
As of May 19, 2020, BDO is the top corporate taxpayer with Robinsons Land Corp in second place followed by Manila Electric Co. (Meralco), Bank of the Philippines Islands (BPI), Unilab Inc.
Rounding up the top ten corporate taxpayers are Mercury Drug Corp., Maynilad Water Services Inc., Metrobank Card Corp., Globe Telecom Inc., and the Philippine Ports Authority.
“We hope that the commendable act of these taxpayers would inspire other taxpayers to do the same and contribute to our nation-building as we work together to get the economy back on its feet in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic,” Finance Secretary Carlos Dominguez III said in a statement.
The Finance Department said that taxpayers that need to pay additional taxes, can do so without having to pay for the penalties, provided such payments are made not later than the deadline set by the Bureau of Internal Revenue. The Bureau of Internal Revenue has extended the tax payment deadlines for the third time in April and May due to the community quarantine being implemented in Metro Manila and several areas in Luzon.
