Elon Musk Announces the Retirement of Model S and Model X Production to Prioritize Humanoid Robotics

Elon Musk declared during Tesla’s Q4 2025 earnings call on January 28, 2026, that Model S and Model X production will end next quarter, marking the end of Tesla’s flagship sedans after 14 and 11 years. Existing inventory sales will go on, and the owner will be fully supported well after retiring. The Fremont lines of factory assembly are reconfigured into humanoid robotics, with 1M Optimus robotics being set to be manufactured a year later by repurposing space. When sales of EVs started to drop, Musk referred to it as an honorable discharge and shifted to independence and AI, alongside advancements such as Elon Musk’s AI chatbot. Optimus, the largest product in the Tesla sales portfolio, is expected to achieve consumer sales by the end of 2027, which will stimulate $20B capex in robots and FSD.
