On Sunday, August 23, 2026, a strong 5.9-magnitude earthquake hit Japan and shook Tokyo and its surrounding prefectures, causing at least 37 injuries and disrupting transportation across parts of the Kanto region. The earthquake in Japan today occurred at 2:00 a.m. local time in the southern part of Ibaraki Prefecture and caused emergency alerts, waking people up all over the Tokyo metropolitan area. Even though this was a very severe tremor, officials reported no Tsunami warning or threat.
Japan Earthquake Today: Where Did the 5.9 Quake Strike?
The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) earthquake data indicated the epicenter was in southern Ibaraki Prefecture northeast of Tokyo. JMA reported a magnitude of 5.9 and a depth of around 70 kilometres, whereas a more detailed analysis indicated that its focus was at depths of about 68 kilometres.
The Tokyo earthquake resulted in a maximum seismic intensity of lower 5 on Japan’s 0-7 intensity scale in areas of Ibaraki, Saitama and Chiba prefectures and Tokyo. As a result, strong shaking was experienced over a high population density region in eastern Japan.
JMA also measured the long-period ground movement at Class 2 in the southern part of Saitama, the part of Chiba Prefecture to the north and 23 wards of Tokyo. Such slower, prolonged movement can be particularly noticeable in high-rise buildings. Detailed observations can be obtained from JMA long-period ground motion report.
Tokyo Earthquake Leaves 37 People Injured
The existing number of injured stands at 37 in five prefectures. In Tokyo 15 people were injured, 9 in Saitama, 8 in Kanagawa, 4 in Chiba and 1 in Ibaraki. Common injuries were minor, such as falling or striking furniture and doors upon awakening from sleep.
An elderly woman in Yokohama suffered a serious hip injury after falling while getting out of bed. The latest Jiji Press report via Nippon.com also confirmed the 37-person injury toll.
5.9-Magnitude Earthquake Disrupts Trains and Infrastructure
The 5.9-magnitude earthquake in Japan resulted in delays to express trains in Tokyo and Narita Airport as well as other regional trains. However, the train service of the Shinkansen was said to be continuing normally.
A water pipe leaked in Tokyo’s Koto Ward and hundreds of houses temporarily lost power. No anomalies have been found at the nuclear plants in the affected area, including the nuclear plant at Fukusima and Tokai No. 2, authorities said.
The Japanese government has set up a task force to gather information and gauge damage after the earthquake.
No Tsunami Warning, but Aftershock Risk Remains
The most significant change is that there was no threat of tsunami from the Japan tremor today. However, JMA has recommended people in areas that had strong shaking to be mindful of the potential for aftershocks.
The authorities also said there was a risk of lower 5 shaking earthquakes occurring in the next week. Residents should be especially vigilant during the initial days and monitor for hazards in areas that have experienced heavy rains in the past few days, causing weakening of slopes.
