The eagerly awaited Malaysia Singapore RTS Link is almost complete, which will change the way people travel between the two nations. The 4-kilometre light rail transit (LRT) project will link Bukit Chagar to Woodlands North in minutes, to ease notorious traffic on the Causeway. With significant structural milestones achieved and official RTS Link testing gearing up in late 2026, commuters are eagerly awaiting its launch. This guide explains the anticipated RTS Link opening date, the readiness of the system and what to expect to learn about RTS Link travel time and fare.

Status of RTS Link Testing and Construction Progress

Early 2026 has been a busy period in the construction of the Johor Bahru to Singapore MRT. By April 2026, most construction activities at the Bukit Chagar station and the associated Customs, Immigration, and Quarantine (CIQ) facility in Malaysia were mostly finished. Meanwhile, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) has made significant progress with the construction of Woodlands North station on the Singapore side, and reports in the region recently reports that marine viaducts and civil structures have reached important milestones.

Official RTS Link testing in the cross border tracks is expected to start around September 2026 after a successful off-site trials of these trains. The extensive testing period will be essential to determine the trains’ safety, signaling, and smooth running prior to public use. RTS Link Opening Date: When Can Commuters Ride?

The biggest concern for thousands of cross-border commuters is when the official RTS Link opens. The MRT Corp and Singapore’s Ministry of Transport say that passenger service is expected to start by December 2026.

It is worth noticing that mega-infrastructures are sometimes finished a little late, but the completion rate indicates that the project is progressing well. Once it is fully operating, the system under the RT Systems (Operations) company (joint venture between SMRT of Singapore and Prasarana of Malaysia) will run from about 6 AM to midnight every day. During peak times, trains will run at 3.6-minute intervals, meaning wait times will be reduced.

RTS Link Travel Time and Fare: What to Expect

It takes about 5 minutes to reach Woodlands North from Bukit Chagar by train. The total door to door RTS Link travel time/fare calculation with walking and automated border clearance, however, does make for an incredibly attractive trip. The entire commute will take only 15-20 minutes. This is a huge improvement on the irregular 1-3 hours spent waiting in line for a bus or car on the Causeway.

Seamless Immigration and E-Gates

The stations have a co-located clearance model to ensure this fast travel time. The immigration clearance will be done twice: first at Malaysia’s point of departure and then at Singapore’s. Arrived travelers will not require another stand in line as the gates, equipped with more than 100 AI powered e-gates capable of processing travelers in about seven seconds per gate, will be set up.

Tickets prices are still to be finalised commercially by RTS Operations in late 2026. According to preliminary estimates, however, the one-way fare will be S$5 to S$7 (RM15.50 to RM21.70). Though it may be a bit more costly than a standard bus, it is definitely a great alternative by saving some time.
