Pakistan’s new trilateral defence partnership is bound to change the security calculations in the South Asian and Middle Eastern regions. The deal provides benefits to the city of Rawalpindi not only strategically but also economically. Islamabad will therefore have to convince Iran that the deal is defensive and not a measure to limit Iranian influence. The task is complicated further if Saudi Arabia is toeing the path of military engagement with groups opposed to the Saudi Crown Prince on the Iranian frontiers, or if Pakistani troops are needed for operations in the Gulf.
Pakistan has tried to cultivate a policy of balance with Saudi Arabia and Iran in the past. With the new treaty far more difficult to implement that balancing approach.

There’s a cost to increased security promises. Further in the future, Pakistan may be called upon to force or contribute some or its resources on various occasions of crisis in the Middle East, which could take away the focus and resources from South Asia agendas.
Thus, the key to whether Islamabad can make use of the alliance without implying a strategic dependence would be the critical test.
