Starlink Removes $10/Month “Roam” Plan from Global Markets

SpaceX has officially discontinued its popular Starlink Roam plan, specifically the “Roam 10GB” tier that cost just $10 per month. This entry-level option was a favorite among users seeking affordable satellite internet backup or connectivity for short trips. Customers of the international markets, such as US, Canada, and Australia, have also been informed via mails that their 10 dollar plan will be terminated within 30 days. Affected subscribers are automatically being moved to a Standby mode at 5/month or enticed to upgrade to the higher priced Roam 100GB plan. The elimination of this low-end layer is a major change in the pricing policy of Starlink, which shifts the casual user towards more expensive plans, including users closely following developments related to Starlink in Asia.

Roam 10GB Tier Discontinued

The Roam 10GB plan was unique for offering a low-cost entry point into the Starlink ecosystem, particularly for owners of the Starlink Mini. It enabled a 10GB data consumption, ideal in the case of emergency backup or weekend warriors. As it has been removed, the difference between the lowest level of active service and the standard levels has greatly increased. Users who previously relied on this Starlink Roam plan for occasional connectivity must now choose between paying $5/month for virtually no data (Standby) or jumping to a $50/month commitment for 100GB, a price hike that has frustrated many in the community.

Impact on Satellite Internet Backup Users

For digital nomads and rural residents using Starlink strictly as a satellite internet backup, this change increases the cost of redundancy. The 10 dollars plan was a perfect keep-alive price. It is now a considerably more expensive affair to have something active and usable, with a monthly payment or the inconvenience of manually switching services. Although SpaceX claims that the new Roam 100GB can be better valued per gigabyte, the removal of the low-priced range eliminates the flexibility, which can be chosen by individuals with low data requirements.
