The new Destination Thailand Visa (DTV) is one of the most appealing long-stay visas out there in Asia for digital nomads, remote workers, freelancers and even lifestyle travelers. The DTV is an attempt to get foreigners away from the never-ending cycle of tourist visa runs and provide a stable legal rule to assist those who would wish to stay in Thailand for a long term, while obviously avoiding the hassle of all the short term visa restrictions.

The DTV has a different approach from regular tourist visas, where one typically has to apply for multiple entry visas, since it has a multi-year structure with 5 years per visa. The visa has been designed especially for today’s travellers who work abroad but choose to reside in Thailand, for cultural travelers looking to immerse themselves in Thailand’s culture, and for those involved in long-term lifestyle activities in Thailand.

What is the Thailand DTV Visa?

The primary benefit of the DTV is its enduring choice. The most substantial benefit of the DTV is its long standing versatility. After approval the visa is valid from the date it is issued for 5 years. At this time, the holders are allowed to enter and exit Thailand as many times as they wish without re-entering Thailand every few months for a new visa.

The immigration will allow the individual to stay in Thailand for up to 180 days when he/she applies to enter the country bordering on the DTV. People with a valid visa may extend their visas with a single Trip to add more days to their visa without exiting the country by filing an application in the Thai Immigration office. 520 days more, costing 1,900 THB as of now.

The double-passenger visa will allow visitors to stay in Thailand for almost a year on a single visa. Once the 180 days have elapsed you only have to leave Thailand for a short period of time before returning and starting another 180 days cycle.

Two Main Application Categories

Thailand has split the DTV into two broad categories to take into account the reason for residence in the country for the applicants.

The first is the “Workcation” category for folks who work remotely, freelance, start-up businesses or conduct online business. The applicant is required to support that his income sources are solely foreign to Thailand. Typically, documents like freelance contracts, employment verification, foreign company registration papers, or portfolio evidence will be required during the application process.

The second track deals with Thailand’s expanding ‘Soft Power’ policy. This category is for foreigners enrolled in cultural or lifestyle programmes including Muay Thai camps, food schools, sports schools, wellness schools or for long term treatments/Studies.

The institutions accepted under this pathway typically send acceptance letters / enrollment confirmations to the applicants. With the purpose of enhancing the chances of approval, Thailand’s government now prefers the applications that have been in their files for six or more months.

Financial Requirements You Must Meet

Strict financial rules apply with DTVs as opposed to regular tourist visas. Proof of liquid savings of 500,000 THB or equivalent (approximately USD $14,500) is required.

Unlike the previous round of Thai visas requiring a minimum of several months of balances, the DTV is for funds in the account in the recent bank statements. Immigrators must be able to prove they have the financial means of support before living in Thailand.

The one aspect of the requirements that most travellers ignore is that other requirements may apply if the visa is being issued from a different Thai Embassy. Other embassies such as those in Singapore or Hong Kong, may also ask for evidence of residency within the country, before accepting the submissions.

How Much Does the DTV Cost?

The official HTTP Base Consortium fee for the DTV is 10,000 THB. Total costs are subject to varying conditions, however, such as nationality, embassy-processing fees and currency-conversion.

The cost of the total processing fee is around ₹25,000 and ₹30,000 INR in total for applicants from India. The estimated overall costs for applicants from Europe are approximately €350 EUR. If anyone intends to apply online they must check each and every document in detail before sending the application there as all application fees are non-refundable.

Can You Bring Family Members?

The DTV’s family-friendly design is one of its best attributes. The DTV Dependent category acknowledges children under 20 years old that are legally with the petitioner or biological children of the petitioner.

Five year multiple entry privileges granted to the primary visa holder are also granted to the dependants. All they have to do is submit marriage certificates or birth certificates, just some supporting documents, to substantiate family relationships.
