Thailand Visa-Free Travel Ends for Indians: Reverting to Visa on Arrival Rules

thailand visa on arrival rules

The time of ad-hoc weekend trips to Bangkok without papers has ended! The temporary four-day visa-free travel for Indians for Thailand has been withdrawn after a rock-solid decision by the Thai Cabinet. Thailand has been aggressively tweaking its immigration system to focus on more valuable tourism and reduce overstays in order to completely lift the previous 60-day fee waiver.

For Indians this will bring back the old Thailand Visa on Arrival (VoA) system. If you are on a trip soon to Phuket, Pattaya or Chiang Mai, you need to adjust to the newly implemented fees, hard currency laws, and physical checkpoint protocols to prevent being denied boarding at the airport.

The New Reality: Reverting to the ₹5,000 Visa on Arrival Fee

The most immediate change hitting your travel budget is the return of the mandatory processing fee.

With the Thailand visa rules 2026 changes in its framework, Indian tourists were required to pay a flat fee of 2,000 Thai baht (THB) which is equivalent to ₹5,000 to ₹5,800 at present rate of foreign exchange. This fee will allow a maximum of 15 days’ stay in the country for tourist purposes.

To help plan your logistics, you can review the broader entry updates on the official Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) portal.

Stricter Border Control: The Hard Cash Rules and TDAC

No more trying to impress the customs officials at Thailand’s entry points with an app or a credit card for your holiday spending. There have been major restrictions placed on financial verification enforcement.

The Cash Mandate

All visa on arrival travelers must have physical money on hand as proof of funds.

  • Solo Travelers: 10,000 THB or nearly ₹ 25,000 in hard cash.
  • Families: Minimum of 20,000 THB (approx. ₹50,000) in physical cash.

You can make payments in major currencies such as US Dollars or Euros, but it is strongly recommended that you bring the equivalent in Thai Baht, to speed up the processing.

Mandatory Pre-Arrival Digital Form

Along with the physical cash requirement, all foreign visitors have to register with the Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) on the official Thai Immigration Portal within 72 hours before they leave Thailand. This digital arrival card is 100% free. Once you have created the QR code, save it to your cell phone and the immigration officers will use the QR code to process your physical visa sticker.

Navigating Hidden Airport Queues and Delays

Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) and Don Mueang (DMK) airports are facing major congestion as India is brought back into a limited group of only four countries that are using the physical VoA tracks.

Avoid hidden airport queues by having your document bundle in hand before disembarking the plane:

  • Passport with a validity of 6 months and 2 empty pages.
  • Return ticket or onward ticket from Thailand (must be confirmed)
  • Hotel vouchers with your total hotel stay period printed on them.
  • One passport size (4×6) picture on a white background.

Pro-Tip: If you are arriving during peak flight landing windows, look for the designated “Express Lane” counter. For an additional cash surcharge of approximately 200 THB (₹500), you can bypass the standard lines and slash your waiting time by up to an hour.

FAQs

1. Is the Electronic Visa on Arrival (eVOA) still available for Indians?

Yes. If you want to bypass the physical airport lines entirely, you can apply for an eVOA online before departure through approved digital visa platforms. However, keep in mind that online processing involves additional administrative service fees on top of the base 2,000 THB rate.

2. Can I extend my 15-day Visa on Arrival once I am inside Thailand?

Generally, the 15-day VoA cannot be extended for standard tourism. If you plan to explore the country for longer, you must apply for a formal 60-day Tourist Visa via the official Royal Thai Embassy or consulate channels in India before booking your flight.

3. What happens if I fail to complete the TDAC form before my flight?

The TDAC form is a mandatory pre-boarding requirement. Airlines checking your documents at Indian departure terminals may deny you a boarding pass if you cannot present the valid TDAC QR code.
