Dujuan’s Track Brings Kanto Into Focus
As of 18th September Typhoon Dujuan was heading northwest over the Ogasawara Islands while observations suggested it will track towards Kanto on the 20th – 21st September.
Weather may be persistent and deteriorating in Tokyo, Chiba and Kanagawa. Weathernews noted that Dujuan could have a storm wind accompanying it, and predicted that the situation is a “holiday time sensitive” brought about by track changes.
Heavy Rain Raises Flood Concerns
This combination will also be tough for eastern Japan as Dujuan comes in with the arrival of an autumn rain front. The possibility that the precipitation may start to increase in intensity before the typhoon enters the area is expected.
Parts of Kanto may see over 200 mm of rain with some spots on Izu Island swamped by over 300 mm. A lot of rain can bring flooding conditions, and increase the risk of landslides and road inundation.
Silver Week Travel Could Be Disrupted
September 19-23 is a holiday traveling week. Domestic flights, Shinkansen service, highways and ferries could all be impacted by a typhoon rolling towards Tokyo.
Airline and/or railroad-passenger users should watch the updates from airline websites or JR announcements at the stations of Haneda and Narita airports. Travel on the roads may be shut down if conditions worsen.
