What happens when an app gets 1 star on play store?

Last updated on December 26th, 2022 at 03:22 pm

It is commonly known that apps with star ratings below four stars have a negative impact on their chances of getting listed. A poor app rating tells retailers that there are problems that need to be fixed before they can confidently feature the app.

We were curious to know if there was a correlation between review volume and average star rating. Do users prefer to leave positive feedback, or is there actually a real risk of receiving negative reviews in the app store given that many apps with low average stars (two or fewer) also have high volume? Are customers as likely to trash you in reviews if you release a version they don’t like as they are to laud you when the opposite occurs?

The results startled us, contrary to our prediction that apps with average star ratings between 2.5 and 3.5 would receive more reviews. Here are the specifics of our research.

10,000 apps from our database that have at least one review in the iOS App Store within the last 30 days were examined and average star ratings were distributed.

The number of apps with an average rating of one star isn’t as great as we had initially thought; in fact, the number of apps with three stars is quite similar.

However, we rounded all numbers in this chart to the nearest whole number, so apps with an average of 1 had an average between 1.0 and 1.49, whilst apps with an average of 3 had an average between 2.5 and 3.49. In light of this, the number of apps receiving 5 is unquestionably more than we anticipated; these apps averaged 4.5–5.0.

We then examined the average star rating after taking the total number of reviews into consideration.

Ten thousand apps make up the sample, as was already mentioned. Over the course of 30 days, each app has received anywhere from 1 to 12,262 reviews. There are typically 129 reviews for each app. Each app has an average star rating of 3.19.

The good news is that there is a significant association between the volume of reviews and average star rating: apps with more reviews tended to have higher average star ratings.

Additionally, the likelihood of high star ratings was noticeably higher for the apps with absurdly high review volumes. In actuality, there was just one app during that time with a 2 star average and more than 5,000 reviews.
