Students in Sulu can now make it much easier to get financial aid to further their studies in higher education. On June 29, 2026, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. visited Maimbung and inaugurated the national program “Bawat Bayan Makikinabang,” handing over a big package of ₱82 million to Maimbung. In the wake of this national project, some ₱200,000 were given directly to every single one of the 410 villages in Sulu, the grant being sourced from the Socio-Civic Projects Fund (SCPF).
Most importantly, half of that amount, which is Sulu’s newly established ₱100,000 Barangay Scholarship pool, is required by law to be spent on higher education for five youth per Barangay.
We know it can be difficult to pay the books, tuition, and graduation fees if you are facing financial hardship, and here’s who’s eligible and how you can apply this week before they’re all gone.
What is Sulu’s New ₱100,000 Barangay Scholarship?
This is a newly established fund for education, which is localised and part of the Bagong Pilipinas Presidential Scholars Program. The decision to put the money directly into local hands instead of trafficking it through long chains of national agencies is a move toward fast-tracking student loans.
Barangay Financial Grant Breakdown
- Total Village Grant: ₱200,000 (SCPF Allocation)
- Community Projects: ₱100,000 (Discretionary)
- Educational Fund: ₱100,000 (Mandatory for 5 Scholars)
As detailed by the Philippine Information Agency, this structure ensures that every selected scholar receives a fixed ₱20,000 cash grant to cover their remaining academic expenses.
Who Qualifies for the ₱20,000 Grant?
The Socio-Civic Projects Fund (SCPF) guidelines are based on specific priority tiers to ensure that the ultimate goal of more graduates in the Bangsamoro region is achieved. The following are the minimum requirements of an applicant to meet the baseline requirements for the Bagong Pilipinas Presidential Scholars Program:
- Regular Student: A student who is enrolled or registering in an accredited college, university, or specialized TESDA technical course.
- A Verified Resident: An individual who is officially residing in the particular Barangay Sulu that he or she is applying for.
- Financially Challenged: From a family that is severely deprived of income or a family that has an income in an active near-poor range.
The Graduation Priority Rule: According to President Marcos Jr.’s directive during the Sulu rollout, barangay selection committees must give maximum priority to graduating students. The core focus is to help students who are close to completing their degrees but are at risk of dropping out due to unpaid tuition balances, thesis costs, or sudden job losses.

FAQs
Can multiple students from the same household receive the ₱20,000 grant?
Selection committees usually follow a one-scholar-per-family rule because of the requirement to have the exact number of five scholars in a barangay. This maximises the number of individual households that are vulnerable within the community that benefits from the financial support.
Is this a one-time cash payout or a monthly allowance?
The educational assistance of ₱20,000 will be disbursed in a structured block grant that will cater to immediate enrollment in school, school materials or research. The programme will be sustained in the coming year based on the monitoring and deployment of this first wave of 2026, according to the Philippine News Agency.
Can a student who already holds a CHED or emergency scholarship apply?
Yes, as long as local municipal ordinances don’t say otherwise. This income is intended to supplement other gaps in education and comes from the office’s socio-civic emergency reserve to help prevent dropouts.
