From Flunking Law School to Jurassic Park: 5 Things You Didn’t Know About Sam Neill

Sir Sam Neill, who passed away at the age of 78, has made the world shed tears over his sudden death. The actor is best known for his role as Dr. Alan Grant in the iconic movie franchise, but he left a legacy that extended far beyond the silver screen.

Neill was a beloved figure for millions as the steel jawed, raptor-avoiding, paleo dinosaur in Steven Spielberg’s 1993 bestseller, but his private life was packed with remarkable turns, secret struggles, and interesting career changes. Here are 5 facts about Sam Neill that you didn’t know that led to his successful career at Jurassic Park.

1. He Flipped His Future by Flunking Law School

Neill’s career trajectory was quite different before he was running from prehistoric predators – he was slated to go into a much more corporate direction. He could have been spending his days briefing in New Zealand in another life.

But his education came to an end after he flunked all four units in his first year of law school. He knew that the courtroom was not the place that was appropriate for him, and so he gave up on his legal career to pursue theatre studies at Canterbury University. This major learning failure would be a tremendous blow to cinema history except for the fact that it gave birth to one of the most versatile actors in the history of cinema.

2. “Sam” Wasn’t His Real Name

It’s difficult to believe that any other name could be a title to the Jurassic Park credits, though “Sam” was a self-bestowed nickname.

  • The real name: He was born Nigel John Dermot Neill in Omagh, Northern Ireland.
  • The Reason for the Switch: He decided to move to New Zealand as a child because there were an excessive number of children named Nigel at his school. He decided to use the nickname Sam in order to avoid any confusion and overcome the extreme shyness. It stuck, and even his closest friends and family adopted it as his name for the remainder of his life.

3. He Was Almost Cast as James Bond

Neill was one of the biggest prospects to succeed the world’s most famous spy franchise, Dr. Alan Grant, before his time as his successor.

As the great Roger Moore retired as 007 in the mid-80’s, Neill was hard-pushed to do screen tests by executives at the studios. He did a fantastic job, but it ended up being given to Timothy Dalton. Seeking to become James Bond could have been a bummer, but it did leave time to accept the role of his lifetime in Jurassic Park.

4. Harrison Ford Was Spielberg’s First Choice for Dr. Alan Grant

If there is one name that cannot be divorced from the beloved, dinosaur-hating paleontologist, it is Sam Neill, but Steven Spielberg had a very different idea about Dr. Alan Grant in the beginning!

The part was originally cast to Harrison Ford, who refused the role after reading the script. Spielberg then cast Neill, albeit weeks before shooting started, after viewing several Hollywood celebrities. Neill delivered a grounded, academic vulnerability to the character that grounded the movie’s terrifying sci-fi premise.

5. His Real-Life Passion Was Winemaking, Not Hollywood

Even though Neill was a world-class star, he never felt comfortable in the spotlight of L.A. He actively rejected the Hollywood lifestyle and instead chose a quiet rural place, Central Otago, New Zealand.

In 1993, the same year as Jurassic Park broke box office records, Neill started his own boutique vineyard, called Two Paddocks, which focuses on making organic Pinot Noir. He was not a celebrity to his own people in his farming village; he was just a neighbor who would make great wine and care for an animal farm of the same names as his popular co-stars.
