Penang’s UNESCO World Heritage city is once again set to be a hotbed of arts, culture and creativity for 17th George Town Festival (GTF) 2026 from 1 August to 9 August. With the theme of “Beyond Boundaries”, it is expected that this year’s Festival will present over 40 programmes involving international artistic partnerships with local traditions.

GTF 2026 ensures top-tier performances and exhibitions reach everyone as nearly 80% of its events will be available for free.

Experience the Festival’s Grand Opening

The George Town Festival started with an amazing presentation at Padang Kota Lama, where the German highlight of the festival, DUNDU Sharing the Light was presented. Visitors were amazed at the giant illuminated puppet, which was manipulated by five puppeteers.

The night also welcomed Malaysia’s indigenously rich sapé exponent Alena Murang who taught audience members about the endangered Kenyah and Kelabit languages while performing traditional music with ornaments made of sapé leaves.

Town Hall Projection Mapping

The highlight of George Town Festival 2026 is the magnificent projection mapping artwork designed to be lit up and displayed on the Town Hall building. The digital story telling and building facade of George Town make it one of the most photo-worthy aspects of the festival running every evening from 8:00 PM to 11:00 PM. Early visitors are advised to come to the best locations for viewing.

Explore Contemporary Visual Art Across Heritage Venues

The festival opens art lovers’ eyes to many venues of the heritage buildings that serve as exhibition spaces throughout George Town during the festival. Contemporary exhibitions by veteran as well as emerging Malaysian artists are showcased at venues like ChinaHouse, Hikayat, and Cultprint.

Core and Canopy is one of the highlights that features the works of five young artists from Malaysia all examining identity, community and urban change from a variety of perspectives.

International Collaborations Bring Global Perspectives

The George Town Festival is continuing to build its international cultural reputation. Artists from 10 countries are taking part in cooperation with various organisations such as the Embassy of Spain, Taipei Economic and Cultural Office, Royal Thai Consulate-General, Ansan Street Arts Festival (South Korea) and Singapore Night Festival. These collaborations bring different art forms, traditions and cultures together for the first time and invite thoughts of meaningful cultural exchange.
