Foreign ministers of members states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) has welcomed the creation of the COVID-19 Asean Response Fund that will help the region respond and mitigate the new coronavirus pandemic.

The response fund will be done by utilising resources from the Asean-Russia Dialogue Partnership Financial Fund that will support the region’s public health emergencies response.

Asean also lauded Russia’s willingness to cooperate and contribute to the region.

The fund was discussed through the Special Asean-Russia Foreign Ministers’ Meeting on Covid-19 that was held last Wednesday.

Cambodia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs praised Russia’s initiative to its goal to unify the region and set aside difference for better cooperation in fighting the coronavirus pandemic. He also thanked Russia for providing support to Cambodian nationals.

While the US and China are currently in dispute, Asean-Russia strategic partnership has been playing a key role in Russia’s humanitarian engagement in the region. As of Tuesday, there are 52,628 active cases of COVID-19 on the 10 Asean member countries.
