Glasgow 2026’s Commonwealth Games ended on August 2nd, after 11 days of top class sporting action. Despite limiting the competition to 10 sports overall, the Games resulted in great occasions, new records and thrilling competition amongst the Commonwealth’s top sporting nations. Australia, as always, dominated, finishing with a huge tally of medals.
The tournament also produced some stellar performances from the Commonwealth members, with England, Canada, India and hosts Scotland all producing great performances, and some athletes making a mark in Commonwealth Games history with their individual achievements as well.
Australia Continues Its Commonwealth Dominance
Australia was the most successful country in Glasgow with a total of 171 medals (70 gold, 45 silver and 56 bronze). The Australian team had a lot of success particularly in swimming and track cycling, running much more competitively than any other team.
The result was not only further underscored by the country’s dominance in the team categories, it was also evident in the individual events. It featured the Commonwealth’s swimmers taking several podiums as the Australian competitors also excelled in boxing, judo and athletics and maintained the Commonwealth’s reputation as the sporting powerhouse.
England Secures a Comfortable Second Place
England took home 110 medals with 29 of them being gold, putting them 2nd overall. The team again had strong performances in Gym, Athletics and Track Cycling and produced very consistent patterns.
The highlight of the whole event was the cycling team’s record four gold-medal victory for Emma Finucane. Her stellar performance was one of the highlights of the individual performances at Glasgow 2026 and was a key to England’s medal tally.
Canada Maintains Third Position
Winning 62 medals – 19 golds and Canada finished third place at Glasgow. The Canadian squad had great consistency across the Games, especially in the swimming, weightlifting and 3×3 basketball events.
It has generated a well-rounded performance across a number of sports, allowing Canada to hold its lead in the chasing pack despite being up against some redwaller competition from India and Scotland.
India Edges Scotland in a Dramatic Battle
With 39 medals, India finished at No. 4 overall, having equalled Scotland’s medal haul, in terms of number of gold medals, of the hosts. But India, who had more silver medals than other countries, finished fourth based on their medal tally (17 silver medals; 9 silver medals for Scotland).
The outcome was particularly impressive since several sports which are part of the medal winning mix in India like shooting, wrestling, badminton and hockey formed part of the Olympic Games in Glasgow. Indian athletes adapted very well with boxing, athletics being the ones that propelled Indian success and weightlifting as well.
Other Nations Shine and Historic Records Fall
It was also impressive that New Zealand, Nigeria, Jamaica, Wales and Malaysia rounded out the top ten despite coming into being a bit small on the calendar of sports. The highlight of the country’s campaign, however, was by the gold medal winner in the men’s keirin, Azizulhasni Awang, who finished his Commonwealth Games career with a gold medal.
South African swimmer,Chad le Clos, was one of the most decorated athletes in the history of the Commonwealth games as he won his second Commonwealth medal in the 4x 100m medley relay at his 21st Commonwealth Games.
