Why Did President Bongbong Marcos Declare a Day of National Mourning?

On April 22, 2025 President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. proclaimed a Day of National Mourning in memory of late National Artist for Film and Broadcast Arts Nora Aunor who died on April 16 at the age of 71.

Nora Aunor, born Nora Cabaltera Villamayor was a giant in Philippine cinema, television and music. Her career spanned over five decades and consisted of over 200 films and television programs. She was renowned for her excellent performances in such classics as “Tatlong Taong Walang Diyos,” “Himala” and  “The Flor Contemplacion Story.” In 2022 she was awarded the title of National Artist the highest honor for Filipino artists.

Nora Aunor referred to as “Superstar” of Philippine films featured in 170 movies and earned many awards from local and foreign organizations. She earned her first Best Actress awards from Gawad Urian and FAMAS for her commanding performance in the film “Tatlong Taong Walang Diyos” which helped her career as one of the best actresses in the country.

President Marcos, in Proclamation No. 870 emphasized that Aunor’s death is a big loss to the country’s artistic sector. He recognized her exemplary contributions by saying that her artistry and commitment raised the level of excellence in the arts, inspiring generations of actors, filmmakers and audiences locally and internationally.

According to Republic Act No. 8491, also known as the Flag and Heraldic Code of the Philippines, the national flag was hoisted at half-mast on all government buildings and establishments across the country and abroad on April 22.

The state funeral for Aunor began with arrival honors at Manila’s Arroceros Forest Park 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday and then a necrological service at the Metropolitan Theater at 9am Her interment is in the Libingan ng mga Bayani, the heroes’ cemetery of the Philippines.

Nora Aunor’s reputation as the “Superstar” of Philippine cinema remains enduring, leaving a lasting impact on the country’s cultural heritage.
