A medical emergency that happened in Hanoi is rare and shocking as it attracted the attention of people all over the world when a 25-year-old man reported to the hospital with two deep-seated chopsticks in both eye sockets. Doctors are claiming that the incident that was reported on April 20, 2026 is being termed as one in a million cases because of the intricacy and severity of the injuries. Surgeons were able to restore the eyesight of the patient even though the situation put their lives in danger, something that many are terming a miracle.
The patient was taken to Viet Duc University Hospital where the doctors quickly noted the urgentness of the case. The two chopsticks (between 7 to 10 centimeters in length) were lodged deep into the eye sockets. One was partially seen on the outside, and the other completely inlaid, so that the depth of the latter could be determined only by the aid of advanced imaging. The medical team was frightened even more by the abnormal symmetry and depth of the injury.
Thorough CT screening and 3D modeling showed the extent to which the patient came to a near-death event. The chopsticks had passed very close to the large blood vessels which serve the brain, and had just passed them by the smallest distance. Physicians observed that just one inch push might have led to catastrophic bleeding, irreversible blindness or immediate death. This slim percentage made the case a national emergency with high stakes that needed to be addressed with accuracy and urgency.
The delicate operation was performed by a team of surgeons, who are specialists in maxillofacial and reconstructive surgery. This process took about two hours and it was essential to do it taking one millimeter at a time to ensure that the optic nerves or other tissues around them were not harmed. All movements needed to be made very precise as even the slightest step would have caused irreversible complications.
This case has been termed as extremely unusual due to the natural defense mechanisms of the body by medical professionals. It is usually when one eye is in danger that the body, through reflexes, moves (or tends to move) further or away, to spare the second eye any damage. The joint injury in both eyes with equal severity could not naturally correspond to the reaction of the body and in this case, the injury is exceptionally rare in world medical literature.
After successful surgery, the patient is now stable and conscious, and doctors have ascertained that his vision has not been impaired. This result is already being hailed as phenomenal based on how the injuries were serious and risks huge. Initial indications indicate that the patient will recover successfully, long-term impairment of function as well as the look will be minimal.
