Penang’s DCM asks minister of education to have discussion over closing of SK Assumption

Malaysia – P. Ramasamy, Penang’s Deputy Chief Minister II, has requested a meeting with Senior Education Minister Datuk Mohd Radzi Md Jidin to address the impending closure of SK Assumption in Butterworth.

On January 31, a Penang MP filed an official letter to the government, requesting a formal meeting to explore the potential of delaying the school’s closure.

The state government has addressed the school’s closure with the school, and the state is examining its options on how to keep the 90-year-old institution from being permanently closed, according to Ramasamy’s letter to the minister.

“Over the years, SK Assumption has produced many excellent students and is one of Penang’s educational facilities with a rich history and tradition,” he added.

He hoped that the government will at the very least delay its intention to shut the school unit at the conclusion of the 2022 academic year.

“At an appropriate time and day, agreeable to him,” he continued, “I am happy to meet with the minister to explore a solution for this matter.”

A calm assembly of about 50 individuals, including parents of SK Assumption kids and previous students, took place in front of the school this morning.

Assemblyman M. Bagan Dalam and Ramasamy were also in attendance at the event.

According to Vernon Fernandez, the media spokesperson for the Save Assumption School Joint Task Force, the education ministry has given the school notice to shut by February 28.

The major reason for the closure, according to the government, was that the landlord, Sri Avenue Sdn Bhd, wanted the buildings back.

“I have a letter in my hands from the landowner, Sri Avenue Sdn Bhd, giving the parties a year to find a solution.  So, what is the Ministry of Education’s justification for closing the school? ” Vernon questioned.

He stated that the ministry had issued the notice to shut the school without properly consulting the parents and other stakeholders. According to him, the taskforce had written to the ministry four times, requesting a conversation session on the subject, but the government had not answered
