Are Bars and Concerts Canceled in Thailand? PM Issues Official Entertainment Guide Following Princess Passing

Princess Bajrakitiyabha mourning period rules

The Queen mother of Thailand, Princess Bajrakitiyabha Mahidol has passed away on 11th June, 2026 after being in coma for three years since 22 December, 2022 at the age of 47. The Prime Minister of Thailand Anutin Charnvirakul has called an emergency Cabinet Meeting and has declared a mourning period of 14 days in Thailand until 26 June, 2026.

Immediately after the announcement, there was speculation among residents, tourists, and business owners about the next steps for concerts, sporting events, festivals, bars and nightlife. Many wondered what could have happened in the event of the king’s funeral, as it had happened during the previous royal deaths, that there was a mass cancellation.

But the government has made it clear, however, that Thailand’s entertainment industry will remain open, although subject to special cooperation arrangements that will reflect the national mood.

Are Bars, Clubs, and Concerts Canceled?

Prime Minister Anutin clearly said people feel free to carry on with their day-to-day existence, employment, transport, and business. Concerts, sporting events, festivals, conferences, and tourism activities are thus able to go forward as normal.

Nightlife areas in Bangkok, Pattaya, Phuket, Chiang Mai and other tourist hubs are also able to stay open. Play areas, pubs and clubs, restaurants and entertainment venues have not been closed.

The government’s decision does not only prioritize paying tribute to the late Princess but also aims to ensure the country’s economic stability, tourism income, and jobs.

Guidelines Apply to Entertainment Venues

Organizations are being urged to adhere to certain mourning rituals during the 15-day period though operations may be carried out.

Perhaps lessons noted could be most notably the standing memorial or standing moment of silence before the beginning of public activities. Events, concerts, games, cultural events and other gatherings will be expected to stop for a short time to honor the Princess prior to the start of their main events.

Venue operators should also consider keeping their venues respectful during the mourning period. There are no specific regulations concerning music, entertainment or operating times, practices and procedures are asked to be discreet and sensitive.

This means that some arenas will take a voluntary cutback on promotional events and/or presentation of events in the early days of mourning.

What Tourists Should Expect?

The operations of flights and hotels remain unchanged, along with the operations of tourist attractions, shopping malls, beaches and transportation. Users will still be able to visit concerts, nightlife, sporting events and festivals, if these are planned.

But visitors to the country may come across indications of National Mourning throughout the country. Thai flags on Buddhist monks’ vespids, among other government buildings, educational institutions, and state agencies will observe the flag by lowering it to half-staff until June 26.

Observations of greater respect or remembrance may also be noted at cultural centers, temples, or government sites by the tourists.

Dress Code and Public Etiquette

For this mourning period, the civil servants and government officials have to wear black or white mourning clothes.

Dark-colored clothes are not a must-have for members of the public and for foreign visitors. However many homeowners are likely to opt for low-key hues in respect.

Visitors should try to dress modestly and sensibly during these times at religious, historical and official sites, but without having to drastically change their clothing.

Impact on Thailand’s Tourism Industry

This measure’s announcement has been supported and welcomed by the tourism sector, airlines, hotel industry and events industry.

Despite its significance in Thailand’s economy, the tourist industry is obviously intent on holding up its end of the deal during the hectic peak tourist season, and no big changes are expected.

The decision aims to ensure that companies don’t shut down, while also prompting people to show respect during the national mourning days.
