(C) President Yoon
South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol has been accused of treason in Martial law declaration on the 3rd of December. This has been done to remove the lawmakers who wanted to remove the order, Yoon resorted to using the military. Army Commander Kwak Jong-geun testified that Yoon personally phoned him and instructed him to ‘drag out’ parliamentarians, but Kwak refused. Unfortunately, they negatively voted for the partial suspension of martial law on the voting on the parliament to which Yoon agreed, and dismantled it six hours after it came into existence.
Yoon now faces direct pressure to quit over the crisis, has apologized but refused to take pressure from opposition leaders as well as his own political party, the People Power Party (PPP). Experts from the PPP think that Yoon would resign before February and early elections would take place in April or May.
It has thus posed a constitutional and political question, for which the two parties agreed on the appointment of a special counsel to probe the act. Kim Yong-Hyun, a former defense minister, and other officials are already suspects. All this time, the opposition is increasing in the PPP, while the second impeachment vote is set for Saturday.
Economy and diplomatic situation in South Korea is shakey, and the problem of state leadership and the need for answers from it are emerging.
