The world’s largest e-commerce platform, Shopee, is coming under fire on the internet after it teased the identity of its newest ambassador, who netizens immediately identified as Toni Gonzaga.
A “face reveal” event is scheduled to take place on September 29, but Shopee has already published a teaser video of its brand ambassador.
Shopee came under fire from internet users after they hired someone they referred to as a “enabler” to represent the company.
“The fact that you were able to secure an enabler as your Endorser speaks volumes about your firm. Kadiri (Disgusting).” one Facebook user said.
Others have resorted to uninstalling the application and rating it with one star on Google Play and the Apple App Store.
Another person pointed out that Shopee fired some of its employees in the same week that it hired a major apologist who charges a talent fee in the millions of dollars. “Shopee Philippines firing a bunch of its employees then hiring a major apologist who charges a talent fee in the millions is some next-level yikes,” the other person said.
Because of the level of opposition, Shopee’s competitor Lazada rose to the number two spot on Twitter’s hot topics list during the same day. The platform’s online vendors have also voiced their own grievances against Shopee, joining the chorus of those already heard.
In light of the recent layoffs at Shopee, columnist Tonyo Cruz said that the establishment of labor unions will assist in protecting employees and their interests.
