Here is a clear explanation of the UK eVisa system

Before planning a trip to the UK, it is important to understand if one needs a visa, an electronic travel authorisation (ETA) or an eVisa. Your documentation essentially depends on your requirements, such as:

  • your nationality
  • purpose of travel
  • duration of stay
  • personal circumstances and skills

UK eVisas are digital records of your immigration status, not to be compared to an electronic travel authorisation (ETA). Here is a clear explanation. The eVisa is nothing but a digital solution for immigration control. It contains identity information, visa or residency status and conditions.

The UK eVisa is gradually replacing a number of documents:

  • biometric residence permits (BRPs)
  • biometric residence cards (BRCs)
  • visa vignettes in passports

In order to access your eVisa, it is important to create a UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) account. This account is necessary if you are permitted to stay in the UK for more than 6 months or hold a short-term employment or education visa.

To set up the account:

  • email address and phone number
  • identity verification to link your eVisa
  • supporting details like passport and visa application number; or passport and BRP number; or expired BRP card (valid for up to 18 months after expiry).

Please keep in mind that it is important that your account details match your travel documents. Keep your information updated, especially if you change your passport, address or contact details. Errors may cause delays at border control.

The shift to digital immigration records is part of the UK’s move in the direction of a modern, paperless system. If you get an eVisa, there is no need to carry physical permits – your status is stored securely online. Just keep your UKVI account up to date.
