Use of face masks in public areas mandatory starting August 1

PETALING JAYA – Wearing face masks in public areas and public transport will be made mandatory starting August 1, Senior Minister (Security) Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said in a statement.

The Senior Minister said that non compliance with the new law will result to being fined or prosecuted in court.

The government decided to make the wearing of face masks in public following the increase of Covid-19 cases for the past three days and the lack of compliance of the public on its standard operating procedures.

Sabri said that the government has refrained from making it compulsary before because some group migjt face financial problem of purchasing face masks. However, the World Health Organisation (WHO) has state that people can make their own masks by following a set of strict specifications.

The government also requires mandatory quarantine for Malaysians and non-Malaysians entering the country from overseas will begin tomorrow. The Senior minister has once again reminded the public to strictly comply with the standard operatin procedures in wearing masks at the same time practicing social distancing.
