While Southeast Asia has become an important manufacturing and investment destination, the region’s economic potential is limited by the lack of markets and by the logistical challenges and uneven regional integration.

Improving ASEAN Regional Trade may lead to a more competitive ASEAN region and lower vulnerability to global economic uncertainty of ASEAN member economies. The next big economic opportunity for ASEAN will be the strengthening of trade ties within ASEAN and not over-reliant on external markets.

ASEAN Regional Trade and Economic Competitiveness

There are regulatory disparities and cross-border challenges among businesses, despite the progress of the ASEAN Economic Community. Greater market integration may help to increase production efficiency, draw investment and enhance regional enterprise’s competitive advantages effectively internationally.

Reducing Dependence on External Trading Partners

ASEAN economies have extensive commercial links with other major economies such as the United States and China. More internal demand and local sourcing may help diversify opportunities and limit exposure to trade conflict and supply chain disruptions.

Improving Cross-Border Logistics and Digital Trade

Reduce costs of businesses by simplifying customs procedures, enhancing transport links and increasing the use of electronic documentation. The ASEAN Single Window is one of such initiatives that leverages EIEX for faster and more transparent regional trade.

Supporting Small Businesses and Regional Supply Chains

SMEs can be particularly affected by complicated regulations, financing constraints and market access. Harmonised standards, low costs of logistics and digital markets may facilitate these businesses to play a more active role in regional production networks.
