Chow sworn in as Penang Chief Minister for second term

Chow Kon Yeow, a Malaysian politician, lawyer and journalist, was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Penang for a second term on 13 August.

Ahmad Fuzi bin Abdul Razak, the 8th Yang di-Pertua Negeri of Penang, handed over the letter of appointment to Chow Kon Yeow at Seri Mutiara, the official residence of the Yang Di-Pertuan Negeri or governor of Penang. 

Chow Kon Yeow was sworn in at 9.38 am at Seri Mutiara. He took oath to become the Chief Minister of Penang. While taking oath, he reportedly said that he would fulfill his duties in the position as Chief Minister of Penang. Fuzi Razak invited him to form the new state government. 

During the ceremony, Chow Kon Yeow’s wife Tan Lean Kee and DAP (Democratic Action Party) chairman Lim Guan Eng was also present.

Pakatan Harapan (PH) reportedly obtained a majority of over 50 per cent votes in the recent state polls. The Election Commission (EC) chairman of Malaysia, Tan Sri Abdul Ghani Salleh, said that Pakatan Harapan (PH) won 21 out of the 40 State Legislative Assembly seats contested in Penang.

Later on, Penang Pakatan Harapan (PH) chairman said that the unity coalition in Penang witnessed a two-thirds majority win. Reportedly, Pakatan Harapan-Barisan Nasional unity coalition won a total of 29 out of 40 seats in Penang state.

According to reports, Chow Kon Yeow won the Padang Kota seat, a state constituency in Penang, for the fourth consecutive time. 

Chow Kon Yeow, a Member of the Penang State Legislative Assembly for Padang Kota and a Member of Parliament for Batu Kawan, previously served as the 5th Chief Minister of Penang in 2018. Chow Kon Yeow has also served as the State Chairman of PH and DAP of Penang state. 

Previously, he also served as a Member of the Penang State Executive Council (EXCO) in the Pakatan Rakyat, an informal Malaysian political coalition.
