During Sony’s State of Play event on Thursday, Rocksteady Studios debuted the first gameplay video of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, an upcoming co-op looter-shooter set in the Batman: Arkham universe. Fans eager to get their hands on the game may be a bit dismayed to learn that it requires an internet connection, even while playing solo.

A post-gameplay reveal FAQ on the game’s website states that “an internet connection is essential to play Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League solo or in online co-op.” According to the FAQ, local co-op will not be supported, hence the game will not be played offline in any capacity.

The internet need is likely due to the nature of the game’s cross-platform co-op feature, which allows players to drop in and out of missions with other players on PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox One. Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League is, of course, a completely live-service game, with a “gear score” that sounds like Destiny’s “Power” and a battle pass containing things that players can use to personalize their characters. According to the FAQ, all microtransactions will be optional and limited to cosmetic products, meaning they will not effect gameplay.

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League’s always-online requirement is similar to those of other recent games, such as Gotham Knights, Monster Hunter Rising, Marvel’s Avengers, and Arkane Austin’s upcoming action horror co-op shooter Redfall, which all require a permanent online connection to play. Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League’s Frequently Asked Questions state that while a PlayStation Plus or Xbox Live Gold membership is necessary for online co-op play, console gamers can play the game solo without a subscription.

Suicide Squad: Destroy the Justice League casts players in the roles of DC Comics antiheroes Harley Quinn, Deadshot, Captain Boomerang, and King Shark as they battle Brainiac-controlled Justice League members to defend Metropolis and the globe. This is the first installment in the Batman: Arkham series since Batman: Arkham Knight in 2015. Rocksteady announced Batman’s involvement in the game in December, marking the final appearance of the late Kevin Conroy as the Caped Crusader’s voice actor.

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League will be available for PS5, PC, and Xbox One Series on May 26.
