Government committed to ensure water supply meets demand, says PM Muhyiddin

KUALA LUMPUR – Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin says that the government will do its best to ensure that ample supply of the country’s water resources is being managed sustainably.

Muhyiddin said that doing this will contribute to the overall achievement of the national key performance index of 99% of water supply coverage, 80% connected sewerage system services and 25% national target in reducing non-revenue water by the year 2030.

The Prime minister however said that climate change might play a role to meet the demand as the capacity may be affected. Climate change may alters the availability, quantity and quality of water supply cycle while also being a factor to the weather change that could cause drought and extreme flood.

The government also plans to explore other alternatives for further expand the country’s water capacity. Groundwater abstraction, rainwater harvesting, river storage and coastal reservoir are other alternative the they maybe looking into.

Muhyiddin said that the Environment and Water Ministry is also preparing an Environmental Sustainability Roadmap that targets towards a green and sustainable pathway from 2020 to 2030.

The government also launched the Green Technology Master Plan (GTMP), with the aim of creating a low carbon and resource-efficient economy by 2030. Muhyiddin said that the government were able to galvanised several cities in Malaysia to develop a low-carbon  plan to further reduce the carbon emissions.
