Lea Salonga will join the cast of Here Lies Love, a musical on the life of Imelda Marcos, on Broadway.
Salonga will perform “Just Ask The Flowers” as the mother of Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino, Aurora Aquino.
She will perform in the musical from July 11 to August 13 for a total of five weeks. Following her five-week run, guest stars from the Philippines will assume her position. A global casting search is also in progress.
In addition to being a member of the cast, Salonga will join the show’s production staff.
This will be Salonga’s first Filipino role on the Broadway stage, as well as her debut as a producer.
Here Lies Love will also mark her return to the Broadway Theater, where she made her debut with Miss Saigon in 1991.
The immersive musical with music by David Bryne and Fatboy Slim dramatizes the rise and fall of the Marcos matriarch and follows the dictator’s family till the People Power Revolution. To immerse the audience, it will reportedly “convert a portion of the Broadway Theater into a dance club.”
Here Lies Love began as a concept album released in 2010 that featured Cyndi Lauper, Florence Welch, Sia, and Tori Amos.
In 2013, a musical adaptation debuted off-Broadway in New York City, starring Ruthie Ann Miles as Imelda, José Llana as the dictator, and Conrad Ricamora as Ninoy Aquino, the opposition leader. Since its off-Broadway debut, the musical has gained popularity and has been performed in London and Seattle.
The official opening night of Here Lies Love on Broadway is scheduled for July 20, with preview performances beginning on June 17.
