Recharging or Withdrawing? How to Know When ‘Me Time’ Goes Too Far

A quiet evening at home can be an act of self-care. After a busy week, solitude can help people rest or recover from stress. The key question is not how many hours someone spends alone, experts say, but whether it restores energy or cuts them off from life. Knowing when alone time becomes too much can help people spot the difference.

When “Me Time” Helps

In Munich, psychiatrist and psychotherapist Dr Tatjana Reichhart says it’s normal for a couple of evenings a week to be spent alone, whether to rest or pursue personal interests. The key is choice: solitude that re-energizes is not the same as being alone because it is difficult to connect. Everyone requires a different amount of alone time that is not detrimental to their health.

It may help to have a quiet evening when someone is returning to daily routines, feeling calmer. However, watching TV when you are too exhausted to do anything else, including hobbies or people, won’t provide real rest, experts say.

Signs Alone Time Is Becoming a Problem

Psychologist Klaus Nuyken advises against avoiding others because it can be a way to avoid uncomfortable feelings. One person may refuse an invitation to rest, simply because he/she is afraid of being judged. Avoidance may provide temporary solace, but may also make social interaction more difficult in the future.

Notice shifts in behavior instead of just one plan that was turned down: In invitations, loss of interest in activities that were once favorites, feeling worse after spending time alone, or deterioration of relationships and responsibilities in daily life. The signs do not indicate a mental health problem; rather, they are a cue to examine oneself.

Why Connection Still Matters

Alone does not equal alone and lonesome. Social isolation is defined as “having few social contacts”, and loneliness is defined by “the distressing lack of, or the distance between, the social contacts that a person needs and has, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). One may be alone without being lonely or be lonely in a crowd.

According to WHO data released in 2025, approximately 16% of the world’s population feels lonely. Approximately 21% of adolescents experience feelings of loneliness. Loneliness is estimated by WHO to cause more than 871,000 deaths every year between 2014 and 2019 and is associated with depression, anxiety, heart disease and stroke. These statistics refer to loneliness and disconnection, not just being alone one evening.

Small Steps to Reconnect

Be gentle: send a message to someone you know and trust, offer to take a walk with someone, accept an invitation to a coffee, or participate in an activity centered around an interest. Don’t fill every hour you have with plans. Its goal is to not make solitude the only option.

Seek help from a mental health care professional if withdrawal persists, interferes with daily life or is accompanied by low mood or anxiety. Seeking assistance doesn’t mean you’re not independent. Healthy alone time should make life easier, rather than feel like the world outside the door is farther away.
