Another fatal construction disaster that has hit Thailand on Rama II Road, one of the busiest transport channels in the country, has further fuelled the fear that there is laxity in the enforcement of safety. Local news reported that a crane fell during a highway construction in and around Bangkok, killing some workers and injuring others. The accident is preceded by a recent railroad disaster related to the construction process, which reveals a disturbing tendency. As the crane and beam collapses are reported on the same strip several times, citizens are getting angry with accountability, contractor control and lack of regulations. Executives have commissioned inquiries, yet critics state that threats have been disregarded throughout the years. The accidents raise some issues that are urgent as infrastructure expansion is growing faster and commuters and workers are daily at risk as a result of speed being the primary concern.
According to experts, the constant crane collapses present systemic failures in monitoring the construction process, and the public safety concerns cannot be overlooked.
