Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob and Singaporean counterpart Lee Hsien Loong announced recently that a Vaccinated Travel Lane (VTL) connecting Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) and Changi Airport will open on November 29.
The statement noted that under the VTL, travelers would be forced to complete Covid-19 tests in place of serving quarantine, which was previously necessary.
According to Prime Minsiter Ismail Sabri, the VTLs represent another significant milestone in Malaysia’s long-standing partnership with Singapore. The VTLs will enable travel as the two nations progressively reopen their borders responsibly, balancing the need to rebuild the economy with the need to protect the peoples’ safety and health after Covid-19.
Ismail Sabri also said in a statement that he is looking forward to the proper implementation of the said travel scheme, which will be added to the others that the nation have already devised to ease the flow of people and commodities between Malaysia and Singapore.
Both administrations said in the same statement that travel through land linkages between the two nations is on the horizon.
According to the statement, both of the government were pleased to see the significant progress made in continuing thorough negotiations on a comparable vaccinated travel program, to resume travel over the Causeway and the Second Link, taking into consideration the public health situations in Johor and Singapore.
A report from earlier this year said that the Malaysian government intended to establish special vaccine transit lanes to promote cross-border travel between that country and Singapore.
At the time, Tourism, Arts, and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri said that conversations on the issue were taking place with representatives from numerous ministries in both nations.
