UST is not part of Philippine’s ‘Big 4’ universities anymore

The Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) is the top university in the Philippines, according to the most recent Times Higher Education (THE) World University Ranking, published on October 12.

ADMU placed in the 351-400 bracket, surpassing the University of the Philippines (UP) in the 801-1,000 bracket. In past years, UP lead Philippine universities in THE rankings. Last year, UP was ranked between 601 and 800. Following ADMU and UP are DLSU and Mapua, while University of Santo Tomas is removed from the ‘Big 4’ list.

De La Salle University and Mapua University joined ADMU and UP on the list. They placed between 1,201 and 1,500 and 1,501 and above, respectively.

ADMU president Fr. Roberto C. Yap SJ stated, “This performance demonstrates that Ateneo is on par with its foreign counterparts, an institution that is really global yet firmly rooted in its Filipino, Catholic, and Jesuit identity.”

The THE World University Rankings 2023 includes 1,799 universities from 104 nations and regions, making them the most extensive and diversified university rankings to date. The universities were evaluated based on instruction (30%), research (30%), citations (30%), industry income (7,5%), and international perspective (2,5%).

This year’s rating was based on an analysis of more than 121 million citations across more than 15.5 million academic articles, as well as survey answers from 40,000 experts worldwide. “Overall, we gathered over 680,000 datapoints from over 2,500 organizations that contributed data,” stated the THE.

The University of Oxford was ranked first worldwide for the sixth consecutive year. Harvard University remained in second place, while Cambridge University rose from equal fifth to joint third.
