With the first high-speed railway opening in Vietnam, it is entering a new age of transportation. The Hanoi–Quang Ninh High-Speed Railway groundbreaking is an important milestone in the development of infrastructure in the country.
It is an ambitious project that will enhance travel between the capital and one of the most iconic destinations and will reduce the journey time to an unprecedented level. An otherwise long road trip can soon be a swift one.
On April 12, 2026, construction started on Hanoi-Quang Ninh, which is an indication that the project is no longer a proposal. This 120-km line will be connecting Hanoi with Ha Long bay in Quang Ninh province, Vietnam.
The railway will have highly developed train systems and will achieve high speeds of up to 350 km/h; the train systems are to be more efficient and comfortable as well. This project makes Vietnam one of the nations that invest in the contemporary rail systems.
As of now, the journey between Hanoi and Halong Bay is on average between two to three hours by road, depending on the road conditions. The new high-speed rail will make this time be a mere 23 to 30 minutes.
Such dramatic decreases will alter the way individuals make plans radically. Visiting Halong Bay will be possible on a day basis and this will open new opportunities in tourism and business travels.
The railway will have five major stations, which particularly connect major economic and tourism locations in northern Vietnam. It starts at Coph la station in Hanoi and then to Gia Binh, Ninh Xa and Yen Tu to Ha long station.
The locations of each of the stops are strategically located to cater to industries, port cities and areas of spiritual tourism. This not only benefits the local economies and regional connectivity, but also guarantees that the project is beneficial to not only the tourists.
This is being spearheaded by Vingroup under its subsidiary VinSpeed. Siemens Mobility is also a partner in the project and will deliver the modern train systems and the signaling system.
This joint venture is an expression of local investment and foreign expertise. Also contained in it are technology transfer plans which assist Vietnam in developing long-term capabilities of high-speed rail systems.
Although the construction process is already going on, the railway is projected to be ready and running towards the end of 2028. This is relatively quick, resulting in making it one of the most ambitious infrastructure projects currently in Southeast Asia.
This project is a priority project unlike extensive national rail plans which could take decades to be realized, as a showcase of the potential of high speed rail in Vietnam. With timelines on schedule, travelers can expect to have access in the next few years.

It is believed that the high speed rail will greatly increase tourism in the country particularly in the Halong Bay, which is among the most tourist attraction sites in Vietnam. Accessibility will also probably raise the number of domestic and international visitors.
Moreover, better connectivity will facilitate industrialization, commerce, as well as regional growth. It is not merely a question of speed, but of re-creating the economic landscape in northern Vietnam.
This railroad is not merely a faster means of travel. Being a pioneer project in the country, it may open the door to further provision of high-speed networks in the future, including even more extended routes linking major cities within Vietnam.
By late 2028, the project will be ready and operational to commercial affairs.
The trains are also capable of reaching speeds up to 350 km/h hence greatly decreasing the time taken to travel.
The time that is taken to travel between Hanoi and Halong Bay will be minimized to 23 to 30 minutes.
