The WWDC 2026 unveiling represented one of the most massive software announcements in the recent years of Apple, but not all the iPhone users are happy. Apple announced that it will no longer send the new Apple iOS 27 update to some older iPhone devices, as well.

The answer would be dependent upon your existing device. Several devices have officially crossed the finish line, while some powerful AI features and Apple’s new liquid design language will be introduced into the newest of its devices.

Why Does Apple Drop Older Devices?

With each major iOS update comes new, sophisticated software functionality that demands more modern device components and architectures.

Apple is laser-focused on artificial intelligence, increased on-device processing and greater integration with their ecosystem with iOS 27. The new, optimised Siri AI and features based on Apple Intelligence require a lot more power than ever before.

That means someone makes the decision that one version, maybe an older iPhone is no longer capable of providing the desired experience and slots it out the door.

As per the WWDC 27 announcement by Apple, the below devices will not avail the iOS 27 update:

  • iPhone 11
  • iPhone 11 Pro
  • iPhone 11 Pro Max
  • iPhone SE (2nd Generation)

These devices will be able to stay updated with security patches for some time, but may not be able to leverage iOS 27’s new features.

Much of the worth-based on non-inclusion of the iPhone 11 line-up-for many users is also relevant considering that the latter are still widely used throughout the Southeast Asian market.

Which iPhones Support iOS 27?

Those who have older devices can still come up to the iOS 27 version and avail of the latest software amendments. Supported Devices Include:

  • iPhone 12 Series
  • iPhone 13 Series
  • iPhone 14 Series
  • iPhone 15 Series
  • iPhone 16 Series
  • iPhone SE (3rd Generation)

After WWDC 2026, another iPhone that will be released in future. If your device is in one of these generations, you should be able to upgrade once it is publicly available.

New Features Coming to iOS 27

One of the latest features introduced in iOS 27 is surely its Siri AI. However, Apple has reinvented Siri with Apple Intelligence technologies making it an all-new conversational assistant. 

The new version can understand the context shown on the screen and communicate with it across devices and be more meaningful in the response.

The other big feature is the Liquid Glass Apple’s new graphical user interface. Now it has smoother animations and more prominently customizable designs in menus, widgets, navigation and even app layouts.

Another new feature Apple boasts of in iOS 27 is app launch times that are said to be much faster and better performance of the system running atop the supported devices.

What Happens If Your iPhone Is No Longer Supported?

Your iPhone 11 or 2nd-generation iPhone SE will not experience any issues. Some services will also be available, such as being able to use apps, access the internet and make calls. But you won’t receive future iOS features, improvements in speed and sometimes security updates.

As time goes on some applications will need newer operating systems and there’s a growing concern with compatibility. The upgrade may be a better option for those users who intend on continuing to use their devices for a couple of years.

Should You Upgrade Your iPhone in 2026?

If your iPhone is still working your user does not need to replace the iPhone. But for users seeking Siri AI and Apple Intelligence functionality or potential future updates, the upgrade might be worth it.

A new update for the iPhone 12 and new devices will retain full support and continue to be updated for several years. Newer devices will benefit the most as Apple increasingly moves towards AI experiences.
