On Friday, March 10, the Indonesian election commission filed an appeal against a controversial court verdict that ordered it to delay the 2024 presidential and general elections, officials said.
The commission will argue against a court judgment that has rekindled the controversy over extending President Joko Widodo’s tenure, which is constitutionally limited to two five-year terms and should expire next year.
Leading politicians, activists, and legal experts have cautioned that delaying the 2024 election could jeopardize nearly 25 years of democratic improvements implemented following decades of dictatorship.
Commissioner of National Elections August Melasz stated that the KPU has filed an appeal, which will be considered and decided by the Jakarta High Court. He did not expound on the arguments of the commission.
The KPU has already stated that preparations for presidential and general elections in the third-largest democracy in the world will continue.
This Monday, President Joko Widodo, who has previously stated that he is opposed to extending his term, stated that he supports the election commission’s appeal.
According to legal experts, the lower court exceeded its authority when it ruled on a complaint by a minor party over election procedures, as this is the responsibility of Indonesia’s supervisory body (Bawasusu) and administrative tribunals.
