Metro Manila Subway will be flood-proof, says Tugade

METRO MANILA – The Department of Transportation (DOTr) said the the Metro Manila Subway is designed to endure against flooding, thanks to the experience of a Japanese firm serving as the contractor for the project.

DOTr Secretary Arthur Tugade assured that they will not be experiencing flooding problems on the subway as the technology and experience of the Japanese construction partners is the assurance.

Tugade added that the location in Japan is worst than location the Philippines because it is below sea level however they were able to prevent flooding on their subway system.

According to Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) chief representative Azukizawa Eigo, other consultants for the project will be the joint venture of Shimizu-Fujita-Takenaka-EEI.

The subway project is expected to have major economic impact as it will be providing direct and indirect employment of construction workers and others.

Tugade said that this project has a great potential for employment generation as it is expected to generate 9,000 direct employment and 40,000 to 50,000 indirect employment.

DOTr Undersecretary Timothy “TJ” Batan said that Tunnel Boring Machines is being manufactured by JIMT in its factory in Japan.

Each Tunnel Boring Machines is capable of producing 12 meters of tunnel segments per day and with excavation up to 600 cubic meters of soil. The 34-kilometer Metro Manila Subway Project will comprise of 17 stations from Valenzuela to the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 3 and FTI.
