MANILA – The country is already in the middle of its “second wave”, the country’s health chief said on Wednesday.

“Actually we are now on the second wave. We are now in the lower part of the second wave.”

“There was a very small wave last few days of January, and then there was a lull, and then we had our second wave, which is the first major wave, which is more than 10,000 cases,”  Duque said in an online briefing with DOH.

Duque’s statement appeared to have caught some legislators and many observers dumbfounded. Many were skeptical given that the country has not met its target testing capacity of 30,000 per day.

There was a very small wave last few days of January, and then there was a lull, and then we had our second wave, which is the first major wave, which is more than 10,000 cases,”  Duque said.

Duque claims that the first three imported cases back in January and February as the ‘first wave’ and after those three cases, the government saw a month-long lull in cases before a sudden surge in March.

According to the Health Department, the country is now focused on preventing a third wave as the nationwide lockdown eases. The department is working to ensure that “minimum health standards” and measures to reduce the spread of the virus are being observed. Duque warned to public of another possible surge of Covid-19 infections and advised to stay vigilant, stay at home as possible and alway practice social distancing.
