PKR elections open, with sights on No. 2 spot

Malaysia – On May 13, the Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) 2022 elections began, with 11,282 candidates fighting for posts in divisions, wings, and the central leadership.

In-person voting began yesterday in Kelantan and Terengganu, according to PKR Election Committee (JPP) head Zaliha Mustafa. It will take place in the Malaysian states of Kedah and Johor.

“In-person voting will take place in Pahang and the Federal Territories on Sunday; in Perlis, Penang, Melaka, and Negri Sembilan on May 16; and in Selangor on May 21.”

When asked for comment, she said, “On May 22, Perak, Sabah, and Sarawak will conduct in-person polling.”

Meanwhile, online voting using the ADIL application will take place on May 17 for those residing abroad and May 18-20 for other party members, according to Zaliha.

The number two position will be the focus of the elections, which will be held in a hybrid system for the first time in PKR history, with secretary-general Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail and vice-president Rafizi Ramli vying for the position.

After being chosen without opposition, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim was re-elected as the party’s president.

The race for the four vice-president seats, which has 17 candidates, including Selangor Mentri Besar and Selangor PKR chairman Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari and Negri Sembilan Mentri Besar and state party chairman Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun, is also in the focus in this election.

Chang Lih Kang, PKR communications director Fahmi Fadzil, and women’s wing chairman and Kuantan MP Fuziah Salleh are all running for vice president.

Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, the party’s organising secretary and a Setiawangsa MP, former Perak PKR chairman Farhash Wafa Salvador Rizal Mubarak, former Perak deputy chief MA Tinagaran, former Kapar MP G Manivannan, and Sentosa assemblyman G Gunaraj are all running for vice president.

After voting ends on May 22, unofficial results will be posted on the party’s website within 24 hours, while the official announcement will be made during the party’s National Congress on June 25, according to Zaliha.
