Spaceballs: The New One Release Date
According to Amazon MGM Studios, Spaceballs: The New One will be released on April 23, 2027 exclusively in theaters.
The studio would rather not proceed with a film on the big screen for the beloved sci-fi comedy series, as it would prefer to sell tickets for a film it can stream. Fans, who’ve been waiting for decades for the return of one of Hollywood’s most iconic parody films, were in a bit of a frenzy after the announcement.
Returning Cast Brings Back Fan-Favorite Characters
Perhaps one of the greatest events of the Hall of Fame panel was a pledge from several of the original cast members to return, all of which will be for their iconic roles.
Mel Brooks is the President Skroob, Mr. Yogurt and also one of the producers of the film. The Dark Helmet’s yet another big-screen comeback, with Rick Moranis reprising his role of Umbridge’s forgettable foe. Bill Pullman is back as Lone Starr and Daphne Zuniga continues her performance as Princess Vespa.
One of the highlight reunion moments in the film is likely to be when these original stars meet again, particularly for those that first saw these characters in the 1987 comedy film.
New Cast Members Join the Adventure
Respecting the original film, Spaceballs: The New One also adds in some new characters to the series.
Starring Josh Gad, the project is also helmed by one of its screenwriters. Not much is known about his character except that he will play a Big Game!His character isn’t publicized but he likely breaks into the follow up’s center.
There is also a fine mix of comedy and drama displayed on the cast, as Keke Palmer, Lewis Pullman and Anthony Carrigan join the mix, expanding the fare for a new generation of fans.
Hall H Panel Reveals the Movie’s New Direction
At the San Diego Comic-Con Hall H show, director Josh Greenbaum, Josh Gad and cast members revealed their ideas for the sequel.
The new movie will not be confined to the universe of Star Wars, but will expand it to encompass today’s entertainment. The sequel is aimed at things that would be a cinematic disaster, such as legacy sequels, interconnected cinematic universes, streaming platform saturation, and modern CGI methods, like digital de-aging.
This new way allows for the film to be true to the concepts of the original but with a hilarious look at what is going on in today’s cinema.
First Teaser Footage Highlights
On panels at Hall H, an exclusive ‘teaser’ was played that included a lot of interesting scenes with humor.
It started with a very complicated and fast crawl, capped with a “Skip Intro” button (following the logic of modern streaming platforms), and then did the rest.
One of the highlights of the show was Rick Moranis’ return as the Dark Helmet, only now, he finds that he is wearing an even larger, vastly over-integrated helmet with too many voice control options.
The teaser also rehashes the iconic merchandising joke in the franchise. This turned out to be part of the initial film’s satire of commercial merchandising, with yogurt being put up for sale in a futuristic gift shop that sold over-priced action figures, outrageous collectibles like NFTs and streaming passes, too.
Production Team Behind the Sequel
Strays is directed by Josh Greenbaum, who has directed such movies as Barb & Star and Strays. The film’s screenplay is written by Josh Gad, Benji Samit and Benjio Hernandez, who have penned the now seasoned Pokémon Detective Pikachu.
Josh Gad is joined as a producer by Mel Brooks, who will remain close to the sidelines, making sure the sequel’s comedy remains as prevalent as that of the original cult film.
