According to a report that was published by Bloomberg News on January 29, 2019, which cited people with knowledge of the matter, the India unit of Apple-supplier Jabil Inc. has started manufacturing components for AirPods in the country, and the company is shipping plastic bodies or enclosures for AirPods to China and Vietnam.
A request for comment from Reuters was not immediately met with a response from either Apple Inc. or Jabil.
In the midst of increasing economic and geopolitical tensions between Beijing and Washington, this decision signals another step in Apple’s efforts to relocate its manufacturing operations away from China.
The manufacturer of the iPhone hopes that India will eventually account for up to 25 percent of its production, up from the current 5 to 7 percent.
Since it began producing iPhones in India in 2017, in accordance with the Indian government’s goal for local production, Apple has placed a significant amount of its bets on the nation.
