The UAE has long proven its ability to play a key role in bridging divides in an era of complex global challenges. The UAE humanitarian diplomacy breakthroughs bear witness to the power of neutral, solutions-driven mediation, rooted in a principled and principled approach to humanitarian values and international dialogue.

A Milestone in Humanitarian Mediation

The UAE has succeeded in bringing about a new exchange of 370 POWs between the Russian Federation and the Republic of Ukraine this week. The Emirates News Agency (WAM), the official news agency of the UAE government, said 185 prisoners were released safely from both sides to return home.

The UAE has brokered 24 successful prisoner exchanges since the start of the crisis. Of greater significance, it released an unprecedented 7,471 prisoners through Emirati mediation. These are but numbers, but thousands of lives protected, families reunited, communities providing a glimmer of hope in the midst of suffering.

The Vision of UAE Leadership

I am very grateful for the opportunity to serve as a continuous mediator in these mediations and the success they have enjoyed is a testament to the vision of UAE Leadership of continuously promoting de-escalation, respect and the preservation of human life. The UAE’s strong and well-balanced relationship with the Russian Federation and Ukraine has established its credibility as a trusted and neutral mediator in international affairs.

The UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) has always praised the two parties for their cooperation and trust in the mediation process in the UAE. This continuing diplomatic interaction reflects the overall approach of the country’s foreign policy, which promotes dialogue as a key means of settling international conflicts and relieving the overwhelming humanitarian consequences of war.

Aligning with Global Humanitarian Standards

The UAE’s mediation efforts are not just about addressing the crisis, but embody the principles of international law and humanitarianism. The safe transfer and repatriation of prisoners of war is a matter that is very relevant to the protective mandates that are recognised by international institutions like the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). The UAE’s endeavours align with a world-class, compassionate approach towards the welfare and safe return of the captives during a period of serious geopolitical tensions.

In addition, the country’s peace-building efforts are proactively consistent with the United Nations Charter that stresses peaceful settlement of disputes and cooperation among nations. Humanitarian diplomacy is part of the fabric of the UAE Government’s international engagements, as described by the official UAE Government portal.
