During the 59th Meeting of the ASEAN Foreign Ministers in Manila, Philippines both ASEAN and US have signed a new Post-Ministerial Conference Comprehensive Work Plan to implement the ASEAN-US Leaders’ Joint Vision Statement for five years.
The roadmap will shape the cooperation to 2031 and will be centered on regional security, economic integration, resilience of the supply chains, clean energy transition, and digital economy. The agreement further anticipates ASEAN-U.S. Dialogue Relations will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2024 and the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership its fifth in 2027.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced U.S. government funding of $2.5 billion for infrastructure, the deployment of clean energy, and economic development to be provided to the ASEAN member countries. Leaders reiterated their resolve to ensure freedom of navigation, protect critical maritime trade corridors, and enhance stability in the Indo-Pacific region. Dr. Kao Kim Hourn, the Secretary-General of the ASEAN, and Philippine host chair Theresa P. Lazaro led the gathering of ASEAN foreign ministers and Timor-Leste, as an observer.
