Canadian rapper Tory Lanez convicted of shooting Megan Thee Stallion

Daystar Peterson, also known as Tory Lanez, was found guilty on Friday, December 23 by a Los Angeles jury of shooting fellow artist Megan Thee Stallion in both feet during a dispute in 2020, according to prosecutors.

The jury convicted Lanez, 30, guilty of three felonies: carrying a loaded and unlicensed firearm in a motor vehicle, assault with a semiautomatic pistol, and negligently firing a firearm. Lanez is potentially facing nearly twenty years in jail and deportation to Canada.

After the decision, a lawyer representing Megan Thee Stallion stated, “The jury got it right. I am grateful that Meg has received her due.”

Grammy-winning rapper Megan Thee Stallion, 27, had previously testified that Lanez fired at her feet at a pool party in the Hollywood Hills in July 2020, adding that the shooting was preceded by a violent fight in which the two had attacked one other’s music careers.

Megan Thee Stallion, whose actual name is Megan Pete, stated to CBS News that she had surgery to remove gunshot fragments from her foot.

The intended sentencing date was January 27. Friday, Megan Thee Stallion was absent from court. After a time of house detention and release on bail throughout the trial, Lanez was brought into jail.

The jury reached a decision on Friday after deliberating for hours over two days following a two-week trial.

After the judgment, Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón stated in a statement, “Women, particularly Black women, are hesitant to report crimes like assault and sexual abuse because they are not believed too frequently.”

“Your (Megan Thee Stallion’s) statement demonstrates extraordinary courage and vulnerability in the face of repeated and brutal abuses you did not deserve. You were subjected to scrutiny that no woman should ever have to endure,” Gascón remarked.
