Covid-19: 165,000 unemployed in Selangor by June 2021

Malaysia – The state executive councilor said that following the Covid-19 outbreak, Selangor reported an unemployment rate of 4.4 percent, or 165,000 jobless people, as of June this year.

Mohd Khairuddin Othman, chairman of the state government’s Youth Generation Development, Sports, and Human Capital Development Committee, said the state government has taken the issue on a serious note and is believing that the percentage could be narrowed down through “Jelajah Selangor Bekerja 2021,” which has nearly 25,000 jobs up for grabs.

According to him, it was anticipated that the initiative, which included 200 businesses, would help decrease the unemployment rate to 3.7 percent by the first quarter of next year.

He said that the unemployment rate in Selangor was at 2.9 percent in 2019 but added that the number will rise to 4.5 percent in 2020 as a result of the pandemic in the state.

When asked about the Jelajah Selangor Bekerja 2021 trip, Mohd Khairuddin said that it will begin on October 23 and run through December this year, going through Shah Alam, Kuala Selangor, Kuala Kubu Bharu, Hulu Langat, and Petaling, among other places.

In the program’s official kick-off ceremony, he stated that it will be a hybrid event, consisting of both online and physical components, and it will not disregard the standard operating procedures that have been established in accordance with Phase 3 of the National Recovery Plan (PPN).

Invest Selangor Bhd will collaborate with Mohd Khairuddin on the career carnival, which will concentrate on employment in the aerospace industry. Other sectors covered by the career carnival include the services, manufacturing, electronics, and management sectors. Selangor residents, particularly the youths, he hoped, would take advantage of the initiatives offered by the state government by enrolling on the website www.selangorbekerja.com.my to help them discover their career choices and to assist businesses in obtaining the personnel they need.
