MACC arrests four hospital employees for taking bribes to arrange funerals

Malaysia – Today, members of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) taken into custody four employees of a hospital in the state on the suspicion that they have solicited and accepted bribes of between RM1,000 and RM5,000 each for work that was associated with funeral arrangement services. According to a source inside the MACC, two of the suspects have the position of health assistant officer, while the other two hold the position of assistant medical officer and range in age from 35 to 41.

According to the source, the suspects were detained at approximately six o’clock in the evening when they came to the office of the Selangor MACC to give their statements. The source also stated that the suspects were believed to have solicited and accepted bribes from specific individuals in exchange for the individuals securing jobs related to funeral arrangement services between the years 2018 and last year.

In the meanwhile, the director of the MACC in Selangor, Datuk Alias Salim, has acknowledged the arrest and said that an investigation into the matter is being conducted in accordance with Section 17 (a) of the MACC Act 2009.

He stated that three of the suspects would be brought before the Shah Alam Magistrate’s Court tomorrow in order to obtain a remand order, while a fourth suspect, a 41-year-old assistant medical officer, would be released on MACC bail on health grounds after providing his statements to assist in the investigation. He said that this would take place after the suspect had provided his statements to help in the investigation.

The MACC detained for five days on May 27 two health assistant officers who were aged 40 and 42 to help in the investigation of the matter.
